In a recent revelation, Shane Jones, an artificial intelligence engineer at Microsoft, has voiced serious concerns about the disturbing images being generated by the company’s AI tool, Copilot Designer. Developed in collaboration with OpenAI and introduced in March 2023, Copilot Designer allows users to create images by inputting text prompts, fostering creativity in its users.
Jones, who has been rigorously testing the product for vulnerabilities, uncovered a series of problematic images that violate Microsoft’s responsible AI principles. These images, generated over the past three months, include depictions of violence, sexualization, underage drinking, drug use, and even copyright infringement featuring Disney characters and Star Wars imagery.
Expressing his dismay, Jones emphasized the urgent need for safeguards, stating, “It was an eye-opening moment. It’s when I first realized, wow, this is really not a safe model.” Despite raising his concerns internally and pushing for action, Jones encountered resistance from Microsoft, which refused to remove the product from the market.
Undeterred, Jones escalated the matter by reaching out to the Federal Trade Commission and Microsoft’s board of directors, urging them to address the risks associated with Copilot Designer. He emphasized the potential harm caused by the dissemination of such images globally and highlighted the lack of effective reporting mechanisms to address these issues promptly.
Jones’s actions come amid a growing debate surrounding generative AI and the need for stricter regulations. With the proliferation of deepfakes and AI-generated content, concerns about misinformation, copyright infringement, and harmful imagery have become more pronounced.
